HIstory on the Hill - Copper and Culture: Prehistoric Copper Metalworking in the Lake Superior Region
Long before modern mining, Native Americans were recovering and mining copper here, in
what was the first use of metal by people in the world.
By at least 8,000 years ago, a full fledged copper industry existed here in the western Lake
Superior Region. The manufacturing of projectile points, knives, axes, awls, celts, wedges,
crescents and many other tools and decorative objects, occurred in what is modern day
Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Robin Mueller and Bob Wheeler of the Copper Country Ancient Sites Conservancy will
discuss the efforts and projects of the CCASC in regards to the study of the earliest
inhabitants of this area.
