UP Kids: Caring for Children & Building Brighter Futures
Why is finding foster care for kids such a challenge in the UP? At a free public forum on Zoom, sponsored by the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 11, Dolores Kilpela, placement services supervisor for UP Kids, will discuss UP Kids programs, specifically foster care: why it is needed; who the children needing foster care are; the process for becoming a foster parent, and the types of support and resources available to foster families. She will also share some of the ways that community members can support UP Kids beyond fostering. Kilpela earned a BS in Criminal Justice from Northern Michigan University and an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Marylhurst University in Oregon. She served as a police officer and as an assistant professor of criminal justice at Finlandia. She oversees foster care and adoption placement services for UP Kids.
