Public Forum on Progressive Education
The Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is sponsoring a public forum at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, focusing on the work of the Keweenaw Community Alliance for Progressive Education (CAPE). The forum will be on Zoom only: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83975762265?pwd=TC9BcStaTDF4dFZOU2ZsUHhZTERoUT09 Meeting ID: 839 7576 2265 Passcode: KUUF For more information email office@keweenawuu.org or visit the KUUF website. Keweenaw CAPE was formed when a group of local parents and educators recognized the need for a different model of education and learning to broaden education choices in the Keweenaw. Susan Nielsen, CAPE executive director, will talk about the principles of progressive education, the programs currently offered here and new ideas under development, including a pilot program called Life Design, a process of applying design-thinking to help people unlock their creative potential and apply it to the world. Life Design was developed by the Stanford University Design School. This summer, using a lesson plan developed by CAPE and Keweenaw Faiths United, children throughout the Keweenaw have been exploring what peace means to them and drawing pictures related to the theme of peace. Their pictures will be on display at the Copper Country Community Arts Center September 21-30 and will then be sent to Ukraine, to let children there know that the hope for peace is universal.
