Public Forum: Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action
Find out what students are doing in the Keweenaw to preserve and protect our climate. At a free public forum on Zoom at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, December11, Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action (KYCA) will discuss their efforts to promote environmentalism and sustainability in our community. The forum is sponsored by the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. KYCA is a youth-led climate action organization. Their mission statement reads: “We aim to create a brave space for all people willing to advance sustainability, environmentalism and the climate crisis. All our actions come from a place of love, justice and respect for the Earth and its inhabitants.” KYCA engages in advocacy, education and supporting like-minded efforts. Their two main projects are working with Michigan Tech on removing its $1.2 million dollar investments in the fossil fuel industry and working to increase the energy independence of the Keweenaw by helping people improve energy efficiency. Speakers will be Francine Rosinski, a third-year environmental engineering student at Michigan Tech and president of KYCA; Elise Rosky, a physics PhD student studying cloud and snow formation; Gabriel Ahrendt, a third-year PhD student studying geophysics, specifically the formation of the Earth’s magnetic field; and Patrick Morath Jr., a Michigan Tech alumnus with a degree in electrical engineering.
