Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sunday Forum
Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sunday Forum Presents Professor Fred Quivik Professor of History (retired) Department of Social Sciences Michigan Technological University ?The Deepwater Horizon Disaster? Date: March 13th, 2016 Time: 10:30 ? 11:30 AM Place: BHK Campus, 700 Park Ave., entrance on Waterworks St., Houghton, MI In January 2015, Prof. Quivik testified as an expert witness for the United States in the Deepwater Horizon trial in New Orleans. The trial was the third and final phase of the case brought against BP for violations of the Clean Water Act as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which began in April 2010 and lasted for eighty-seven days. Before the judge made a ruling in the case, the U.S. and BP reached a settlement agreement, in which BP will pay a penalty of about $20 billion. Prof. Quivik will address three topics: 1) an overview of the Deepwater Horizon disaster and the nature of the trial under the Clean Water Act, 2) a summary of his testimony and the role the United States hoped it would play in the trial, and 3) reflections on the role the oil spill plays in our collective addiction to fossil fuels. Fred Quivik retired this past summer from the Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Tech, where he taught history of technology and environmental history and was a member of the faculty in the graduate program in Industrial Heritage and Archaeology. He continues as editor of IA: The Journal of the Society for Industrial Archeology. Prior to arriving at Tech in January 2010, he had worked for more than fifteen years as an expert witness in Superfund and related environmental litigation. He applied his expertise as an industrial historian in cases involving mineral extraction and mineral processing industries. Although he has retired from teaching, he continues to work as an expert witness.
