Huron Creek Water Management Plan Public Forum
On Sunday, August 14, the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is holding a public forum on the Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan. The forum begins at 10:30 a.m. and can be attended in person at the BHK Child Development Center or on Zoom. Masks are required at the in-person program. The goal of the project is to update the existing Huron Creek Watershed Management Plan (WMP). The original WMP was written in 2009 and approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, currently the Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes & Energy. The WMP must be updated not only because of its age but also to document/update the changes that occurred within the watershed due to the Father's Day Flood in June 2018, when seven inches of rain fell in six hours, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and altering hydrology. Current watershed conditions will be assessed through field inventory, water quality monitoring and hydraulic modeling activities. The WMP will be updated to reflect changes and to prioritize sites that require Best Management Practices. Presenters: Melanie Kueber Watkins, a civil engineer and research assistant professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Michigan Technological University, and graduate student Ben Holland. Watlins is also chair of the Portage Township Planning Commission and owner of Agate Engineering, LLC.
