The organ was built in 1907 by the Estey organ company, and is comprised of pipes from two of their organs. It was rebuilt by the Verlinden company in 1970. A peek inside the two-story organ chamber is traditionally offered after a recital. Kathleen Alatalo-Arten will perform selections of music written for the pipe organ, based on Lent and Easter hymns and images. From Bach to Diemer, from the 16th to 20th centuries, before and beyond, composers have expressed Lent and Easter-related themes in music. Traditionally associated with religious music, the pipe organ offers opportunities to create evocative sounds as well as reminding the listener of well-loved melodies. Admission is free; donations will be cheerfully accepted to support maintenance of the instrument and building.
